Low Coolant Light Question

Postby Biscayne John » Wed Apr 02, 2014 11:14 pm

I am not getting anything out of the shop manual, Does the low coolant stay on like the oil pressure/temp lamp and then go off (providing the coolant is full) when the engine is in the run position.
Thanks

The last time I had this problem, it was the connector at the sensor. Just needed a bit of crimping to fit tight on the sensor.

I am not sure, but when mine started showing low even though the radiator was full, I broke the book out too following the schematic. I started at the sensor and when I found that it was just a loose plug, I never did find the module as I was a happy man at that time.

Ken, That is the worst shop manual I had ever seen printed by GM, only mention no description or location. I am sure the B.O.P. manuals are just copies of the Chevrolet manual

Brian,
I have to retract my statement, but it would be nice if there was a name for the module.
Thanks Brian I know where to look now, and I think the problem is in the module connection.

I will give it a look in the morning. Basically the module is a transistorized N/O relay. and it seems like the sensor controls the ground that completes the power circuit of the relay, or module in this case.
Thanks a lot

If you end up needing a NOS module or sensor let me know, I should be able to get them.

The only reason there is a module in the first place is to provide a "bulb check" when you start the car. If the low coolant module(GM refers to it as a relay sometimes) is the problem and you cannot locate one, you have a few options. You can unplug it and jump the black/yellow wire from the sensor to the yellow that goes to the bulb in the cluster. If you do this, your low coolant light will work, but just not illuminate at startup. Also, in a pinch, a generic 5-pin relay could be substituted for the GM one. PM me for pin #'s if you want to go that route.
This of course is if Clyde can't find one(which is unlikely).

Note- the very act of listing all of these has made me realize I have some kind of problem.....
